Dinosaurs have captured our imagination and been the
subject of many outlandish theories and motion picture
thrillers. These large iconic creatures have also proven
to be controversial figures in the creation/evolution
debate. There is evidence that dinosaurs walked the
earth at the same time as man, although evolutionists
insist they became extinct over 65 million years ago -
long before evolutionists claim man evolved.
Job 40:15-24 describes a creature that looks like a
dinosaur. Of particular interest is the reference the
Lord makes to its tail (verse 17), which says: "He bends
his tail like a cedar..." Another dinosaur-type described
in Job (41:12-34) is the Leviathan, which resembles
what we would call a "fire-breathing dragon." Of
course we realize that Biblical statements alone
wouldn't be enough to convince critics that dinosaurs
roamed the earth with man, but in the caves of Europe
and rock outcroppings in Utah there is additional
evidence that early man was familiar with dinosaurs.
Apparently our ancestors were as fascinated with these
creatures as we are today. They adorned the walls of
their caves with anatomically correct interpretations of
the fossils we display int he halls of our museums. In
Utah, at the Natural Bridges site in Black Dragon
Canyon, a very specific type of dinosaur called a
Tenontosaurus can be seen carved onto the walls.
This dinosaur's leg tendons make it very distinctive. In
addition to being carved in the rocks, its fossils can
also be found in this area. So, are we to believe that
anatomically correct drawings of dinosaurs that have
only been recently discovered don't offer any
indication that these primitive people saw the creatures
they drew? Remember that these people didn't have
the benefit of museum displays or published pictures
to use as references for their drawings.
Following are some facts about dinosaurs that both
creationists and evolutionists agree:
- Most dinosaur bones are petrified.
- Iridium is found in the dust layer that dinosaurs
are found in, as well as within the bones of the
dinosaurs themselves.
- The large behemoth-like creatures we typically
call dinosaurs are now extinct.
Let's take a moment to examine these facts and
compare them to the two most popular theories. The
most popular secular version included in textbooks
across America is that an immense meteorite struck the
earth many years ago. The explosion from this strike
formed a dust cloud that surrounded the earth and
blocked out the sun for a number of days. As a result,
dropping temperatures killed the dinosaurs. This
theory is based on the findings of iridium in the bones
of the dinosaurs and in the dust layer where most of
the fossils are found. Iridium is an element known to
exist in meteorites. It is also found in an ancient
volcano in the Indian Ocean that spews iridium today.
The major problem with the above theory is that a dust
cloud (even of this proportion) cannot account for
fossilization. Fossilization occurs when a living animal
or plant is suddenly buried in sediment (not dust). The
minerals in the sediment replace (or wash out) the
softer tissue, which is why most fossils are also
petrified. In order to believe this theory you have to
believe that the iridium within a crashing meteorite can
permeate the ensuing dust cloud. Then you have to
believe that this dust managed to wash through the
bones of the dinosaurs somehow replacing their soft
tissue with the iridium that was originally present in the
meteorite and then its dust cloud. In additional to all of
this, you have to believe that somehow the dust cloud
preserved the dinosaurs from decay. This theory
seems to require a leap of faith larger than the
dinosaurs themselves! It also does not take into
consideration that a dust cloud of this magnitude -
capable of wiping out the dinosaurs - would have most
certainly wiped out all other living creatures.
Now let's examine the creation theory. The creation
theory proposes that most dinosaurs died during the
Flood. Noah would have taken two of each types of
these creatures onto the Ark (in their infancy stage - not
as full-grown adults. Note: the largest dinosaur egg
ever found was the size of a football, indicating that the
infant would have been just slightly larger), but the post
Flood world with more extreme seasonal changes
would have proven to be a hostile environment for
them (as it was for man, whose lifespans started
drastically decreasing at this point). Consequently,
they would have become extinct shortly afterwards.
How do the facts stack up against this theory? First of
all, the Flood waters and the mud slides they would
have produced within this theory provides the means
for a fast burial of these creatures, as well as the
sediment required for fossilization. Second, we know
that iridium, which is present in the dinosaurs' bones,
also comes from beneath the earth as well as from
meteorites. The Bible tells us that at the time of the
Flood, the fountains of the deep broke through the
windows of heaven. In other words, there were
erupting fluids coming from beneath the surface of the
earth that broke through the atmosphere causing rain.
It is entirely logical to assume that this rain would have
contained iridium. This theory does not contradict any
of the facts we know about dinosaur fossilization, nor
does it contradict the evidence that implies ancient man
was familiar with dinosaurs.
In the creation/evolution debate it is necessary for us to
take a step back and reexamine the facts upon which
theories are established. It is the opinion of Creation
Science Alive that the evidence that points to the
extinction of the dinosaurs supports the creation model
and contradicts the evolution model. It is up to you to
decide which theory you believe to be more "scientific".
